まだ赤字先行で、将来に賭ける会社
借りた設備に頼る形をやめ、2025年3月からアイオワ州に自前の8メガワット施設を持ち始めた。旧型の計算機7,700台を売って新型437台に入れ替え、台数を減らして効率を上げる方向へ動いている。
専用の計算機を電力の安い施設に並べてビットコインを掘り、必要なときだけ売って運転資金に充てる。掘った分はできるだけ持ち続け、資金が要る局面で現金化するという持ち方をとっている。
価格が下がれば採算はすぐ悪化し、計算機は数年で陳腐化して買い替えの投資が絶えず要る。統合契約が特定の事情で解消された場合は、どちらかが相手に$0.5Mの解約金を払う定めになっている。
2026年2月に株式を1対10へ併合して上場基準に収まる株価へ整え、その翌月にCathedraとの統合を発表した。財務の立て直しと事業の組み替えを同時に走らせている。
ビットコインの価格と、採掘に払う電気代、計算機1台あたりの効率で採算が決まる。2026年3月に合意したCathedraとの統合が、規制と裁判所と株主の承認をすべて通るかどうかも先行きに効く。
Sphere 3Dという社名からは、いまもデータ保管の機器を売る会社に見える。だが登記上の出発点は2007年のT.B. Mining Venturesという鉱山会社で、2022年1月からはビットコインの採掘に戻っている。
2023年12月には旧来の機器事業も売り払い、残ったのは採掘だけになった。2025年の産出は111.6ビットコインで前年から6割減ったが、これは安い電力の場所へ機器を移し替えている途中の数字だ。
