リチウムを使わず、鉄と塩と水という手に入りやすい材料で電解液を作る。燃えないうえ摂氏マイナス15度から50度まで動くため、火災や爆発の懸念でリチウムイオン電池を置けない場所にも据えられる。
電力網向けのギガワット時級の蓄電システムEnergy Baseと、顧客の現場で組み上げる中核部分を設計・製造して売る。ピーク対応の火力を置き換える用途や、系統を安定させる用途が主な行き先になる。試験室の結果をもとに、2万回の充放電でも容量が落ちない設計だと説明している。
リチウムイオン電池は価格が下がり続けており、その優位に割って入るのは容易ではない。量産の立ち上げには多額の資金が要り、収入が乏しいまま増資が続けば持ち分は大きく薄まる。初代のEnergy Warehouseと二代目のEnergy Centerはすでに販売をやめたが、現場に残る分の保証と保守は今も背負っている。
創業者のCraig Evans氏とJulia Song博士が2011年に技術開発を始めた。その後は特別買収目的会社との合併で上場し、2024年3月に旧法人を吸収して今の一社にまとまっている。売る製品を大型一本へ削り、量産の立ち上げに資源を寄せている。
再生可能エネルギーの普及ペースと、量産でどこまで原価を下げられるかに事業がかかる。8時間を超える蓄電ならリチウムイオン電池より安く済むという計算を、実際の納入実績で裏づけられるかが問われ続けている。
鉄を流して電気をためる電池は、1970年代の研究者がすでに試している。だが充放電のたびに電解液に水酸化物がたまり、数回で性能が落ちてしまう。当時の研究者はこれを止められず、手を引いた。ESS Techはその一点をProton Pumpという仕組みで解いた会社である。
もっとも、半世紀の宿題を解いたことと、それを工場で安く作れることは別の話だ。リチウムイオン電池の価格が下がり続けるなか、売る製品を大型のEnergy Base一本に削り、8時間より長くためる用途だけで勝負する構えを取っている。
