まだ赤字先行で、将来に賭ける会社
予測ソフトを作る会社と、その計算を代行する解析会社は普通は別の会社だ。ここは両方を自社に持ち、受託の現場で見つけた粗をソフトに戻すという往復を社内で完結できる。
決算はソフトウェアとサービスの二区分に分かれる。ソフト側はGastroPlusやMonolix Suite、ADMET Predictorといった予測ソフトの利用料だ。サービス側は同じ計算を自社の技術者が製薬会社に代わって回す請負料になる。
研究開発費が絞られると、ソフトの更新と受託の受注が同時に細る。受託側は技術者の手を売る商売で利幅が薄く、案件が減った時の落ち込みはソフトより急だ。買収で広げてきた無形資産の減損も付いて回る。
Lixoft や Immunetrics のように買った会社を看板ソフトの周りへ畳み込んでいく組み立て方を続けてきた。ソフトと受託、どちらの稼働も落とさないことに手を掛ける。
収入は製薬会社の研究開発予算に丸ごと乗っている。ソフト側は年ごとの契約更新率、サービス側は案件の入り具合で振れ、上位数社の大口顧客への偏りも小さくない。
薬が人の体に入ってどう吸収され、どこに溜まり、どう消えていくか。Simulations Plus が売っているのは、それを実験ではなく計算で見積もるソフトだ。
ただしこの会社はソフトを売って終わりにしない。同じ計算を自社の技術者が製薬会社に代わって回す受託解析も抱えており、決算はソフトウェアとサービスの二区分に割れる。売る側と使う側を同時に持つため、片方が鈍ればもう片方が支える形にはなる。ただし両方とも同じ製薬会社の研究開発予算から出ている以上、業界全体が絞られれば二つ揃って細る点は変わらない。
